Room For Trees

Making ‘Room for Trees’

Three years ago, when Stump Up For Trees was founded, our Trustee, James Suter, proposed the ‘Room for Trees’ initiative. A way for the hospitality sector to not just give back but take an active role in the ecological restoration of their landscapes.

Have you got have ‘Room for Trees’ – August 2020

For each room booked, the hotel would make a small donation, and guests had the voluntary option of including an additional donation on top of that. This would be totalled and a monthly donation made to Stump Up For Trees.

These donations go towards not just tree planting, but the community tree nursery, our consensus approach to habitat restoration, and the grants that maintain the long-term agreements we make with landowners, our monitoring practices and ecological surveys.

Whilst our initial launch of this community generated micro-finance initiative was exciting, Covid-19 put the breaks on rolling it out on a large scale.

Bruised but by no means broken, the hospitality sector demonstrated its strength and resilience and soon Room for Trees was having significant impact. First at Gliffaes, James’ own hotel, and then by one of our greatest supporters – Caradog Hotels, a local family run group with two hotels, The Angel and Abergavenny Hotels.

The Angel Hotel

The Angel Hotel, established in 1829 as a Posting Inn, is now a luxurious 4 Silver Star hotel, located in the heart of Abergavenny. With  award-winning High Teas, striking Oak Room restaurant (holder of two AA Rosettes) and old world charm of the Foxhunter Bar, the Angel Hotel provides a warm, friendly environment in a stylish and comfortable setting.

If you have the pleasure of staying at The Angel, you may find a beautiful room card (designed for us by Hannah Firmin and Pomegranate media) telling you all about ‘Room for Trees’ and the significant impact the Angels support has had.

The Abergavenny Hotel

In a charming, red-brick Victorian building, The Abergavenny Hotel is the younger sister of The Angel. With 20 simple and comfy guest bedrooms and a heart-warming, eclectically-styled bar, The Abergavenny Hotel offers a classic yet contemporary alternative to her luxury counterpart.

The Abergavenny Hotel

Each donation may seem like a drop in the ocean to individual guests. However, Caradog Hotels through both The Angel and Abergavenny, has made significant measurable impact in the local area, supporting farmers to deliver ecological restoration through woodlands, hedgerows and shelterbelts on farms including contributing to the planting and long-term management of over 4000 trees in this year alone.

Planting team at Blaenawy

This Autumn we will be looking for new partners to join the Room for Trees initiative. We can offer establishments not just the opportunity to act to meet the environmental and biodiversity crisis. We offer a direct route to supporting the local community and can demonstrate the direct impact of support. When we talk about enabling our supporters to see the impact of their actions, we’re not just talking about reporting and long-term engagement – you can come out and see the trees you’ve helped to grow, you can even bring a team to help plant them.

If you or an establishment you know, may be interested in finding a way to make a difference. Please contact us at hello@stumpupfortrees.org we will put you directly in touch with our Trustees and Project Director Rob Penn to discuss how we can support you to support us in making the change
